Check three separate dimensions
Identify the operating system, CPU architecture and required package format before downloading. x64 and ARM64 are not performance tiers and are not determined by the amount of RAM. A manufacturer may sell devices with different processors. Read the requirements for the exact release rather than assuming an older tutorial describes current compatibility.
Windows: inspect System type
Check the About section in Windows settings. Many Intel and AMD 64-bit PCs use x64 builds; Windows on ARM devices require a separate architecture check. A 64-bit label alone does not make x64 and ARM64 interchangeable. If the application cannot run, compare its filename with the system architecture first. If only the window fails to appear, consult the project's startup dependency guidance.
macOS: identify the chip
Use About This Mac to distinguish Apple Silicon from Intel. Match the release's architecture naming, which may use arm64, aarch64, x64 or x86_64, and check the minimum macOS version. Back up existing profiles before updating. A security warning calls for checking the origin and integrity of the download, not blindly running a command that removes operating system protections.
Linux: match architecture and distribution
The uname -m command can help identify machine architecture: x86_64 commonly corresponds to x64 and aarch64 to ARM64. Then choose a DEB, RPM or another package actually offered for the release and your distribution. A matching extension does not guarantee all dependencies are available. Avoid mixing incompatible repositories simply to install one program, and check that the requested architecture was actually published.
Verify the download and test the upgrade
Use a trusted project release source and check the version and filename. If the publisher provides checksums, compare a locally calculated value with the trusted published value; an arbitrary matching hash does not establish trust by itself. Save your previous version and configuration details. After upgrading, verify the running version, profile loading and usual routes. Treat mobile release-status pages separately rather than assuming similarly named APKs are official desktop-project releases.
